If you are staying with us for several days, we highly recommend setting aside at least one day for exploring beyond the immediate surroundings. Bassigney is ideally located for discovering beautiful lakes, charming villages, unspoiled natural landscapes, and historic towns, all within easy reach. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience an authentic side of France and discover some of the hidden gems that make this region so special to us.
Fayl-Billot, le Lac de la Liez and Langres
Morning
Start your day with a visit to the Maison de la Vannerie in Fayl-Billot, the French capital of basket weaving. You will also find several shops where you can buy products of local artisans.
Lunch and Early Afternoon
Next, head to Lake Liez, one of the most beautiful natural sites in the Haute-Marne region. Surrounded by hills and forests, it's the perfect place for a picnic, a refreshing swim, or simply relaxing by the water. During the summer months, you can also enjoy the inflatable water park floating on the lake.
Late Afternoon
End the day by exploring the beautiful fortified town of Langres, one of the region's most remarkable historic towns. Walk along its impressive medieval ramparts and towers, visit the magnificent Saint-Mammès Cathedral, wander through the charming cobbled streets, sample the famous Langres cheese, and take in the spectacular panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
Gérardmer and the Vosges
Morning
After breakfast, head to Gérardmer, about an hour's drive from the house. This charming town is famous for its beautiful lake surrounded by mountains. Start your day with a stroll along the lakeshore or wander through the lively town centre with its cafés, ice cream shops and local boutiques.
Lunch
Enjoy a picnic by the lake. Afterwards, relax on the beach or, during the warmer months, go for a refreshing swim in the clear waters of Lake Gérardmer.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, drive to the Refuge du Sotré, where you'll return later for dinner. From the refuge, set off on a hike to the summit of Le Hohneck, one of the highest peaks in the Vosges Mountains, reached in around 30 minutes.
If you'd like a longer walk, continue along the famous Route des Crêtes towards Petit Hohneck and Col de Falimont. This easy to moderate circular hike rewards you with breathtaking views over the forests, valleys and mountain peaks of the Vosges. Depending on the season, you'll pass high mountain pastures, grazing cattle and, on particularly clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of the Alps.
Dinner
Return to the Refuge du Sotré by 7:30 pm (advance booking is highly recommended) for a hearty traditional mountain dinner. End the day by watching the sun set over the lake and the surrounding mountains - one of the most memorable views in the Vosges.
